Bears CB Douglas Coleman III released from hospital after being stretchered off field vs. Chiefs

Chicago Bears safety Douglas Coleman III suffered a scary injury on Thursday night in their preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. Trainers and medical staff had to bring out the spine board as things appeared to be quite serious after Douglas was laying on the ground after a tackle.

Coleman was making a tackle on Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell, causing his neck to snap back a bit after the collision. Luckily, he was released from the hospital on Friday night, according to an official press release from the National Football League.

A scary moment occurred in the third quarter of Thursday’s preseason finale between the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs. Bears cornerback Douglas Coleman III suffered a scary injury and had to leave on a stretcher.

Coleman was on the field for a kickoff and went to make a tackle. He then stayed on the ground and had to leave on a stretcher via a medical vehicle, according to the Bears’ local broadcast. The entire team then went out on the field around Coleman as he left the field.

Coleman spent the last three years in the CFL with the Ottawa Redblacks before landing an opportunity with Chicago in training camp this year. Last season, he put up an impressive year with 60 tackles, four sacks and three interceptions – including a pick-six.

Coleman played college football at Texas Tech, where he was a first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2019. During his four years with the Red Raiders, he totaled 141 tackles, including three for loss, to go with a sack and 11 interceptions. That includes a monster senior season in which he had 63 tackles and eight picks.

Coleman initially signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent, but only played with the practice squad before moving on to the CFL. He signed with Chicago in January.

Douglas Coleman was looking to continue his quest of making the Bears’ roster as he suited up for the final preseason game of the year. His tackle on the kickoff was his lone stat of the night, and he previously had two tackles in last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Chicago didn’t play its starters Thursday night with the preseason winding down. The Bears won their first three games – Thursday is their fourth since they played in the Hall of Fame Game – and continued their quest for an undefeated run before the season opener next month.

All eyes this season are on Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick who made a strong impression in two preseason games. His stats didn’t jump off the page, necessarily – 10-for-20, 170 yards and a rushing touchdown – but he put together multiple highlight-reel plays to show he’s adjusting to the NFL level well.

The Bears will kick off the 2024 season at home on Chicago’s Lakefront on Sept. 8 against the Tennessee Titans. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET at Soldier Field.
