Under NFL rules, any player who takes their helmet off while on the field of play is subject to a 15-yard penalty. Chicago Bears (3-8) cornerback Kyler Gordon became the latest victim of the rule during the Week 12 “Monday Night Football” road tilt against the Minnesota Vikings (6-5).

While it will officially go down in the books as a penalty, it’s fair to question if it was deserved. On the previous play, Gordon’s facemask broke and was dangling around. And so, he took it off and attempted to show the referees that it was broken.

The referees didn’t seem to care and flagged Gordon for taunting.

Making matters worse, the play where Gordon’s facemask broke just so happened to be when fellow cornerback Jaylon Johnson intercepted Vikings quarterback Josh Dobbs. Johnson returned the ball to Minnesota’s 37-yard line, but due to the taunting penalty, the ball was brought back to Chicago’s 48-yard line.
