Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields has watched from afar as many of his contemporaries have inked long-term extensions this offseason.

Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles and Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens are just a couple of quarterbacks who got paid. Chicago will soon have to make a decision of Fields’ future, as he is eligible to sign a contract extension following the 2023 season. The Bears also have the option of picking up or declining Fields’ fifth-year option.

Any talk of contracts, however, are the furthest thing from Fields’ mind. Speaking with reporters at OTAs Tuesday, the 24-year-old said his main focus is improving on the Bears’ 3-14 record from 2022, which netted them the first overall pick in April’s NFL Draft. Chicago later traded the pick to the Carolina Panthers for a package headlined by receiver DJ Moore.

“I think every year is a big year,” Fields said, via Pro Football Talk. “So, I mean, yeah — I don’t really have anything to expand on that. But for me, every year is a big year and I’m excited to show. I’m not worried about contracts, I’m worried about wins. I could care less.”

Will Justin Fields make a jump in 3rd year in Chicago?

Fields, Chicago’s first-round selection in 2021, has 25 starts under his belt in two seasons. Just 5-20 under center, Fields faced pressure often in 2022, sacked 55 times. The Bears’ offense ranked 28th in the NFL, despite Fields nearly breaking the single-season rushing record by a quarterback. Fields rushed for 1,143 yards and eight scores, adding 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions through the air.

“For me, I just try not to make excuses,” Fields said. “I feel like I said this multiple times last year — no matter what the situation is, I’m going to go out there on the field and play my hardest for my teammates, for my coaches. So, that’s kind of how I look at it. I never really was looking at it as excuses, if that’s the answer to your question.”

Fields will enter the 2023 campaign with a true No. 1 wideout at his disposal in Moore. Moore, who recorded three straight 1,000-yard seasons from 2019-21, impressed Fields during the second day of OTAs.

“DJ brings great talent to this team,” Fields said. “His personality, it fits in well with everybody really from the first day he got here. He’s a hard worker, a great player. Just the way he acts around the guys, he just fits in really well with our team. I’m definitely excited about that.”
