Ben Roethlisberger suggests Byron Leftwich as candidate for Steelers offensive coordinator

The Pittsburgh Steelers have not made a change at offensive coordinator. Despite the complaints of many fans, Matt Canada continues to run the show on that side of the ball. But if the team does decide to move on at some point, former quarterback Ben Roethlisberger named a strong candidate.

During an episode of his Footbahlin‘ podcast, Big Ben argued that Byron Leftwich would be a good fit in Pittsburgh.

“I think if the team was to move on from Matt, I would love to see Byron Leftwich come in here and be the OC,” Roethlisberger said. “He was here, he’s played under Coach T(omlin). He understands what it means to be a Steeler. I think he’s a great OC.”

Leftwich served as Roethlisberger’s backup for four total years in Pittsburgh. His first stint with the Steelers (2008) lasted just one season. He then re-joined the team for three seasons from 2010-12.

This season, Steelers fans have griped about Canada’s offensive scheme and the team’s inability to consistently put points on the board. On multiple occasions, a “Fire Matt Canada” chant has broken out inside Acrisure Stadium. So far, no moves have been made.

Leftwich most recently served as offensive coordinator for Tampa Bay from 2019-22. He ran the offense of the Bucs team that won a Super Bowl following the 2020 regular season, led by Tom Brady.

Since being let go in January 2022, Leftwich has not taken another coaching gig.

Prior to his time in Tampa Bay, worked with the Arizona Cardinals from 2016. He started as an intern before taking over the duties of quarterbacks coach in 2017-18.

So, if the Steelers plan to take any OC recommendations, Roethlisberger is making the case for Leftwich.

Byron Leftwich enjoyed a 10-year NFL playing career

Before his coaching days, Leftwich enjoyed a decade-long career in the NFL as a player. He’s most known for his time with the Jaguars, suiting up for Jacksonville from 2003-06.

In 2004 and 2005, Leftwich started in 25 games and owned a 16-9 record with the Jaguars. Overall, he ended his time in Jacksonville with a 24-20 record as a starter. He threw for 9,042 yards and 51 touchdowns while completing just under 59% of his passes.

For the rest of his career, Leftwich primarily served as a backup with the Atlanta Falcons, Steelers and Buccaneers. He only started in six total games following his final year in Jacksonville.
