A Tuesday report provided an update on the injury Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered during the Super Bowl, and his potential recovery timeline. Initial tests on Burrow’s knee have indicated that he will not need any surgery or major treatments for his knee as it appears to be only a sprain.

Joe Burrow receives update on injury from Super Bowl

“By the end of the game Joe Burrow was limping pretty badly and as he was walking out of the stadium [there were] videos of him limping even worse, he didn’t miss a play,” explained NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “Of course he’s a tough dude, that’s what you would expect.

“But he did get his knee checked out — had a couple different tests after the game. My understanding is — no surgery is required for Joe Burrow. That is a very big deal. The injury, which is believed to be a sprain, is going to heal with rehab so it’s probably gonna take a couple weeks but no surgery. Considering the fact that Joe Burrow spent all of last offseason having surgery and it really short-circuited his offseason — this of course is better.”

Burrow suffered a painful-looking injury after being sacked for the seventh time in Super Bowl 56 by the Rams, grasping at his knee immediately after the play. The drive had ended with the sack, so Burrow limped off the field under his own power as the punting team came on. After being looked at briefly, Burrow waved off additional trainers who were looking at his injury and re-entered the game without missing any plays.

Although it didn’t appear to be a major issue for him in the game’s final moments, Burrow’s previous major MCL injury caused his new injury to be a source of serious concern. Now, however, it appears that there’s no major worries in regards to his knee and he will be recovering in plenty of time to prepare for next season.
