Bill Belichick on Jared Verse: 'There's so much to like about this guy'
The Los Angeles Rams had a first round pick in the NFL Draft for the first time since the 2016 NFL Draft. They used it on Jared Verse, an edge rusher from Florida State.
Bill Belichick had joined the Pat McAfee Show for the draft. There, he praised Jared Verse and explained everything there is to like about him.
“This kid, of course, transferred down to Florida State and he really had an impact on the team,” Bill Belichick said. “He can, sort of like [Laiatu] Latu, he can play outside, inside. Powerful. Explosive. There’s so much to like about this guy.”
“Power rush. Very explosive guy. Can handle the running game in the C-gap, off-tackle areas. Here he is again shedding a block, snatching that tackle and shedding inside. he gets off blocks well. He attacks the pocket well and he’s got a lot of power.”
The last time the Rams had a first round pick, they used it on Jared Goff in 2016. Since then, Los Angeles has been aggressive in making trades to win, giving up those early draft picks.

Now, with future Hall of Fame defensive lineman Aaron Donald retiring, the Rams do need help on the defensive line. Luckily, as Bill Belichick explained, Jared Verse is a player who can stop the run and rush the passer.
“You’ve got to stop the run to rush the passer and that’s one thing Verse can do. He can handle the run and he can rush,” Belichick said. “So, you earn the right to rush the passer, by stopping the run and getting ahead. That’s how you earn that right.”
Joel Klatt on why Jared Verse could dominate in the NFL
Ahead of the NFL Draft, Joel Klatt explained why he thinks Jared Verse can dominate in the NFL.
“He’s probably the safest defender that you can select. Verse is more versatile [than Alabama LB Dallas Turner]. I think he can play with his hand in the ground. I think he can play standing up. I think he’s scheme-diverse. He’s very strong at the point of attack. He’s got a great first step. He’s got the production sacking the quarterback, and yet he’s also a really good run defender,” Klatt said.
“This guy is easily a guy that I think can be the best defender in the class. He just doesn’t have the top-line attributes, from a testing perspective, that a Dallas Turner does. But, Jared Verse is the safest defender, at least on my draft board.”
