Former Tennessee and Clemson third baseman Billy Amick is taking his talents to the next level. The Minnesota Twins selected him in the second round of the 2024 MLB Draft.

Amick spent two years at Clemson, where he helped lead the Tigers to an ACC title as a sophomore in 2023. He then entered the transfer portal and took his talents to Tennessee, and his college career ended in Omaha with a national championship.

Amick was a key piece for Tennessee in 2024 as the Vols won their first-ever national championship. He started all 65 games in which he appeared, hitting .306 with 23 home runs and 65 RBI. That came after an All-ACC season at Clemson when he hit .413 to go with 13 home runs, 63 RBI and a .464 on-base percentage. He also hit .441 with runners in scoring position, showing he’s capable of coming through in big moments.

As he wrapped up his college career, Amick generated some MLB Draft buzz as a highly rated prospect because of his ability to come up with timely hits. Now, he’ll take his talents to the next level.

Scouting report on Billy Amick

Billy Amick’s ability to hit for average and come up clutch helped him jump out as a prospect, according to MLB.com’s evaluators. Add in the occasional power surge with his high bat speed, and he could find himself carving out a role in the majors.

However, it might not be at third base. Amick might find himself moving across the diamond to first base at the big-league level.

“Amick has a quality right-handed swing and repeatedly barrels balls despite frequently chasing pitches out of the strike zone,” MLB.com’s scouting report said. “His aggressive approach yields hard contact to all fields but does cut into his walk totals. His bat speed and strength create plus raw power that plays all over the ballpark and should translate into 20-25 homers per season.

“Amick has gotten the chance to man the hot corner for the Volunteers and looks like he’ll be able to stay there in pro ball. Equipped with below-average speed and quickness along with average arm strength, he’s a fringy to average third baseman who has looked more comfortable as he has gained more experience. He does have the work ethic to continue to improve but also may wind up at first base.”
