Billy Horschel sinks incredible putt, sends Atlanta Drive GC to inaugural TGL title

With two holes to go in Match 2 Tuesday’s TGL final, Billy Horschel faced a 17-foot, 10-inch putt. His Atlanta Drive GC team trailed New York Golf Club by one point with two holes to go, and since the Hammer was thrown, he could earn two points by winning the hole.
Horschel read the double break perfectly. He sank his longest putt of the season to not only put Atlanta on top with one hole to go, but also send it to victory in the inaugural TGL championship.
Atlanta Drive went up one point into the final hole, and Patrick Cantlay had a clutch chip to force Cam Young to hole out a chip. He nearly did, but it didn’t go. New York lost the match – and Atlanta Drive GC became the first-ever TGL champion in a thriller.
Immediately after the putt, ESPN’s Marty Smith caught up with Horschel about what just transpired. The Florida great said as soon as New York threw the hammer down, he knew it was time to go win the hole. Once the putt fell, though, he admitted he doesn’t remember much of the celebration.
“We threw the hammer, and they were just baiting,” Horschel said. “They accepted, I said, ‘Listen, I’m making this putt.’ JT had a really good point on the fall line. He hit some putts in practice. He said, hey, just hit it right here and just die it over. And I hit the spot, it looked good. Two feet out, I knew it was in the hole.

“I blacked out. I think I said some [expletives], I think I said something about this being my house. It was a lot of fun. I’m loving this, man. This is awesome. We’ve got a one-point lead, one hole to go? This is fun, man. This is absolutely exciting.”
After the match, Horschel said he remembered walking – well, running – away from the putt as it went in the hole, and Justin Thomas followed him. It was a little fuzzy otherwise, but he remembered yelling, “This is my f—ing house” multiple times. As Scott Van Pelt noted, Horschel’s kids were in attendance, although he acknowledged they know now to repeat that word.
“They’ve heard it,” Horschel told Van Pelt. “And they know not to say it.”
Billy Horschel’s heroics set up a decisive 15th hole in singles play as New York looked to force a winner-take-all match and Atlanta looked to hang on. Cantlay’s tee shot was just off the green, but his chip was close enough to concede the putt. That meant New York had to drain the chip to win the hole, and Young’s chip just missed.
As a result, Atlanta won the match, bringing home the first-ever SoFi Cup. That brought the first TGL season to an end after the venture, founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, came to fruition. Now, all eyes shift to the Tour season – and The Masters are just two weeks away.
