Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty is the consensus top running back prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft and will have no shortage of teams vying for his services.

The 20-year-old tailback has made himself known on a relatively smaller stage in the Mountain West but wants to become a household name for America’s Team. Jeanty recently revealed that if he could script where he goes in the draft, the Dallas Cowboys would be his preferred landing spot.

“If I could script it, I mean, my family’s all in Texas,” Jeanty said on the “Kickin’ It With Dee” podcast. “I used to play in the Cowboys practice stadium. So, family being there, all the connections, all the relationships. I feel like that would be just the perfect city to play in. Hey, you know what to do, Jerry [Jones].”

Ashton Jeanty makes preferred NFL destination clear

Jeanty, born in Jacksonville, Florida, attended Lone Star High School in Frisco, Texas, roughly an hour north of AT&T Stadium. As Jeanty mentioned, he has family in the area and thinks it would be a perfect city to play in.

Jeanty, who finished 11th in rushing last season, leads the nation in 2024 with 1,734 yards and 23 touchdowns on 7.7 yards per carry. Jeanty has a healthy lead over the next closest running backs, with UCF‘s RJ Harvey and Iowa‘s Kaleb Johnson in a two-way tie with 1,328 yards on the ground.

Now, would the Cowboys be interested in Jeanty? The answer, in all likelihood, would be a resounding yes. Dallas is 31st in rushing this season, averaging just 83.7 yards per game. Rico Dowdle is the team’s leading rusher with 374 yards on 4.5 yards carry. The Cowboys are in a freefall, having dropped four games in a row. With quarterback Dak Prescott out for the remainder of the season, the losses could continue to pile up.

As of now, Dallas owns the 11th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Essentially, landing Jeanty would mean taking him with perhaps a top 10 pick. The Cowboys have done it before, selecting Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall pick in 2016. That’s turned out well for Dallas, as Elliott had led the league in rushing twice and tallied four 1,000-yard seasons.

Jeanty would immediately become the focal point of the Cowboys’ offense — that is no question. Will Dallas pull the trigger? We’ll find out April 24 in Green Bay — the site of this year’s draft.
