The San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk could agree to a new contract very soon. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, both parties had another meeting on Monday and talks continue to progress on a long-term contract extension. Schultz said there has been movement on a potential deal, but there are some minor things that need to be ironed out before the deal can be done.

At one point, it looked as if the 49ers were going to trade the star wide receiver. It was reported that the 49ers and the Pittsburgh Steelers have a trade agreement in place, but the 49ers have been actively working to get a new contract for Aiyuk.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Saturday that the 49ers were working with Aiyuk to get a deal done. “Here’s where things stand. The 49ers are engaged in contract talks with Brandon Aiyuk and his representatives, they are hopeful that they can get a deal done,” he said on SportsCenter. “Pittsburgh remains on standby. They would like to trade for Brandon Aiyuk. They have parameters in place, but trade talks, I’m told over the last week, have been pretty quiet. The people I’ve talked to who thought maybe this was a coin flip a week ago believe that San Francisco probably has a slight edge, maybe 60-40, something like that.

“Executives I’ve talked to around the league do expect the 49ers to end up signing up to an extension that might be in that $30 million per year range, maybe slightly less.”

Steelers are ready to sign Brandon Aiyuk if a trade happens

Before Fowler’s report, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said the Steelers are in a position to give Aiyuk the contract he wants. “Here’s where it stands, after talking to several sources informed of this situation,” he said on The Insiders last Tuesday. “The 49ers and the Steelers do, in fact, have a deal to trade Brandon Aiyuk from the 49ers to the Steelers. And in any other situation – literally – that would be major news. Except for this situation. There are many other parts of this. By the way, I should also mention the Steelers are also in a very good place for the Brandon Aiyuk contract extension if he got traded to the Steelers. And again, that deal is in place. It just takes the 49ers to say, ‘Yes, we are doing it,’ which they have not done. I want to repeat, the 49ers have not done [that] yet.”

Aiyuk was selected by the 49ers No. 25 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was named to the All-Pro Second Team last year after catching 75 passes for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. Before the 2023 season, the 49ers picked up Aiyuk’s fifth-year option of his rookie contract.
