Brandon Jones names solution for 'lack of respect' in Xfinity series in wake of Martinsville drama

The NASCAR Xfinity Series was the talk of the motorsports world after a fiasco at Martinsville. There were 14 cautions in Virginia, and drivers routinely ran over each other. It led to a mandatory drivers meeting, and Brandon Jones has a solution for the lack of respect that’s become an issue.
While Jones bemoaned the drivers meeting as being a bit pointless, he did offer up a fix. He believes if NASCAR made the Xfinity Series cars, or at least their noses and fenders, a bit less durable, it would discourage Jones and his peers from being so aggressive. Here’s his argument for yourself.
“Man, I don’t know. I could’ve probably stayed home for that one,” Jones said, regarding the drivers meeting, via Barstool Sports’ Rubbin Is Racing. “It was one of those deals where it was like, ‘We all know this.’ Here’s my solution, put freaking steel noses on them, and put steel fenders back on them and this all goes away. Like, these cars — I’ve told people time and time again, the reason this is happening is — sure, it’s a lack of respect, but it’s also because the cars can do it.
“You can drive in there, smash somebody and you don’t get much repercussion on your race car. I think that there was a time where, when we had steel bodies on these race cars — shoot, you could go down the back stretch and accidentally hit the wall and you’re cutting tires. So, it eliminates people, you know — getting close and hitting each other, and doing that kind of stuff. Maybe that wasn’t the best kind of racing, and people are upset that the bodies were so thin and so soft that they’re taking people out of contention, but it’ll damn sure stop you from hitting somebody.

“I don’t know, that’s my fix for it. The whole car doesn’t have to be steel, just put the areas that would really hurt you, make that — put that in our hands. It’s on us if we run into somebody and take ourselves out. But I think, honestly, that’s the issue. The cars, they’re just so rock solid.”
That certainly would be a permanent fix to drivers wrecking each other in the Xfinity Series week-in and week-out. While it wouldn’t be perfect, it would prevent what we saw at Martinsville, and that’s something nobody in the sport wants to see a repeat of.
Time will tell if NASCAR takes Brandon Jones’ advice, or if they continue to leave it in the hands of the drivers. Either way, the Xfinity Series will be governed a bit more strict over the rest of the season, as they look to avoid what went down at Martinsville from repeating in the future.
