Everyone thought it would be Christopher Bell winning for Joe Gibbs today. It was instead, Brandon Jones with a major victory. Jones came back to JGR after two years away at JR Motorsports, two winless years.

A throwback Matt Kenseth paint scheme, a major win, and a huge statement. Brandon Jones has struggled in the last two years. Reunited with JGR, he is back in victory lane.

Jones was almost there at Phoenix earlier this season. He earned three straight top-10s. Now, he has his first win since Martinsville, Week 8 of 2022. Today, he got it done again against Cup Series talent, too.

I used to joke a bit about Brandon Jones being cursed. His last win came at Martinsville in 2022. Later that season while he was on his way to winning the fall Martinsville race and punching his ticket to the Championship 4, he was infamously wrecked by his own teammate, Ty Gibbs.

Since that point, and switching over to JR Motorsports for obvious reasons, Jones has been okay. He has had moments. But things have been hard the last two years. This season, he’s back in victory lane and has his ticket punched to the playoffs once again.

So far this season, Richard Childress Racing has three wins, JR Motorsports has three wins, and Joe Gibbs Racing has two wins. That is how the first eight weeks of the season have played out so far.

Brandon Jones won, Justin Allgaier made a statement

While Brandon Jones won the race, Justin Allgaier looks like the favorite to repeat as champion. He has six top-five finishes in eight races, including the last five races in a row. On top of that he has led the most laps in three races this season. He also has one fastest lap award and three stage wins.

Allgaier now leads the points by 71 over Sam Mayer. He has a 99 point lead on fifth place, Jesse Love. Jeb Burton is in the final provisional playoff spot at 12th overall, and Allgaier leads him by 155 points. Dominant to start the season.

Brandon Jones deserves a lot of credit. He did not lead the most laps, and he didn’t have to. But for the entire race, Jones was able to stay with the leaders. Allgaier, Bell – it didn’t matter. Jones was right there in the background the entire race waiting for his moment.

When the time came, Jones’ pit crew got him off pit road quickly, and it allowed him to race to the win. It was a massive day for Jones and a huge statement from Allgaier.
