Brett Favre accused of withholding evidence in Mississippi welfare case

Brett Favre continues to dig himself into a deeper hole. The former Green Bay Packers star is now accused of withholding text messages from discovery requests made by the Mississippi Department of Human Services.

A.J. Perez of Front Office Sports reported the news regarding Favre. The report states that the MDHS accused the former NFL quarterback of failing to comply with the discovery requests.

Favre has been accused of taking part in a welfare scam that defunded a program meant to help Mississippi families in need. That money was allegedly allocated to the University of Southern Miss — Favre’s alma mater — to assist with the improvement of athletic facilities.

“Despite being identified as the sender or recipient on the face of these text messages, Favre objected and claimed he could not verify many of these text messages’ authenticity,” MDHS said in a document.

Favre has attempted to have the civil lawsuit filed against him thrown out. But courts have rejected the motion, forcing the ex-NFL player to face the music.

Front Office Sports reports that “MDHS stated that approximately 330,000 documents have been produced by more than 40 defendants in the case since the lawsuit was filed in May 2022. Favre, so far, has handed over just 24 pages of documents, according to the filing.” 

Favre petitioned Mississippi Supreme Court to throw out civil case

In May, Favre petitioned the Mississippi Supreme Court to dismiss his civil case. The civil lawsuit aims to “recover millions of dollars of misspent welfare money meant to help some of the neediest people in the United States.”

Obviously, that didn’t work out well for the former NFL star.

In April, Hinds County Circuit Judge Faye Peterson denied Favre’s request. Now, the former Green Bay Packers star asks the Mississippi Supreme Court to overrule her decision.

The civil suit named more than 12 defendants in the case.

The lawsuit comes from the Mississippi Department of Human Services. It claims that money from the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program was improperly distributed.

Among the claims, it alleges that $5 million went towards a volleyball arena at Southern Miss — where Favre’s daughter played. An additional $1.7 million went towards the development on a drug for concussion treatment.

Favre’s attorneys claim that the Mississippi Department of Human Services made “utterly meritless” allegations against the former quarterback.

At this time, Favre does not face any criminal charges.
