Brock Purdy was injured during the final minutes of Monday Night Football against the Detroit Lions.

The San Francisco 49ers quarterback was sacked by Lions defensive back Brian Branch on the play. Purdy appeared to land hard on his wrist or arm after the hit, and was seen on the sideline trying to throw before the team shut him down for the rest of the night.

Josh Dobbs replaced him at quarterback for the rest of the drive, and wasted no time with the opportunity. The former Tennessee quarterback went 3 of 4 passing for 35 yards and found the end zone on a lone rush for seven yards for cut the lead to six points before the end of regulation.

While the severity of Purdy’s injury is unknown as of this report, Purdy was having a career night having thrown for 377 yards and three touchdowns despite throwing a pair of interception during the Monday night matchup.

With the 49ers dropping to 6-10 and having been eliminated from the playoffs, it remains to be seen if San Francisco opts to have Dobbs start in place of Purdy during the season finale on the road against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday Jan. 5. Kickoff for that matchup is slated for 1 p.m. ET.

If he’s finished for the year, he’ll have wrapped up the year having thrown for 3,487 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also scored four touchdowns on the ground during the regular season — including one against the Lions on Monday to give him four total before the injury took him out of the game late.

Having played 14 games so far this season, Purdy won’t touch his numbers from 2023 even if he does play during Week 18. Last year he passed for over 4,000 yards while throwing 31 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions, a total he has almost mirrored across two less regular season games in 2024.

Looking ahead to the offseason, the 49ers will look to remain healthy and try to put themselves back into position to contend for a Super Bowl again.

A more pressing question of whether or not the team will pay Purdy this offseason or wait also remains to be seen as the top of the quarterback market continues to grow more expensive each offseason.
