Broncos' Eyioma Uwazurike suspended indefinitely for gambling on NFL games
The NFL’s crackdown on gambling continued Monday, as the league issued an indefinite suspension to Denver Broncos defensive tackle Eyioma Uwazurike for betting on NFL games during the 2022 season.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Uwazurike will be eligible to petition for reinstatement no earlier than July 24, 2024.
Uwazurike is coming off his rookie season after the Broncos selected him in the fourth-round of last year’s NFL Draft out of Iowa State. He appeared in eight games, compiling 17 tackles (11 solo) and two quarterback hits.
He becomes the latest player this offseason to receive a suspension for betting on NFL games, joining the Detroit Lions’ Jameson Williams and Isaiah Rodgers, formerly of the Indianapolis Colts, among others. The former received a suspension of six games for the 2023 season. Fellow teammates C.J. Moore and Quintez Cephus received indefinite suspensions and were subsequently released by Detroit.

The Colts, meanwhile, released both Rodgers and Rashod Berry after both were suspended indefinitely by the league. Rodgers placed approximately 100 bets — some on Colts games — under the name of an associate of his. Majority of the bets were in the $25-50 range, at least one coming in the low four figures.
NFL continues crackdown of betting on league games
The league also gave the Washington Commanders’ Shaka Toney an indefinite suspension for betting on NFL games.
“It’s unfortunate and a little disappointed for the young man,” Commanders head coach Ron Rivera told reporters in May. “I mean, he’s a guy that really came on for us last year at the end of the season and with what’s going on, obviously it’s something that he’s dealing with on his own with his agent and the league. So for us, we’ve just gotta be able to move forward and hopefully in a year’s time, we’ll see what happens.”
