Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Jameis Winston has never been short on personality. He’s been one of the more entertaining figures in the National Football League for years. And he’s also been no stranger to delivering pre-game speeches to his teammates over the years. On Saturday, he was amped up for the Browns vs. Packers matchup and rallied the troops, in a way that only Winston could.

Winston has had a wild career, one that even saw him throw for over 5,000 passing yards, over 30 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2019 campaign. You’ll be hard pressed to find another player with a season quite like that one. His 5,109 passing yards that year led the league. He was also sacked 47 times that season, the most in a season in his entire career.

In 2015 and 2016 with Tampa Bay, he threw for over 4,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Since the 2019 season with the Bucs, he hasn’t played in as many games for a variety of reasons. From 2020-2023, Winston played in 21 total games with the New Orleans Saints. His best season in New Orleans came in 2021, when he threw for over 1,000 yards and 14 touchdowns in seven games.

On March 20th, 2024, Winston agreed to a one-year deal with the Cleveland Browns, where he’s expected to be the backup to starter Deshaun Watson. In 2023, Watson played in six games with the Browns before suffering a season-ending injury. Before injury he completed 61.4% of his passes for 1,115 yards, while tossing in seven touchdowns with four interceptions.

Joe Flacco took over as the quarterback under center and in the process, helped to guide the Browns to the first round of the playoffs. Flacco moved onto the Indianapolis Colts this offseason, which made Cleveland need to search for a backup to Watson for the 2024-2025 campaign. That’s why they brought in Winston.

Jameis Winston was prolific in his college career with FSU

Winston had a prolific college career with the Florida State Seminoles, eventually guiding them to the 2013 BCS National Championship over the Auburn Tigers. He also won the Heisman Trophy in the 2013 season, firmly cementing his place in college football history. The Alabama native threw for 3,820 yards and 38 touchdowns with 10 interceptions in the 2013 season prior to winning the Heisman. Winston became just the third Seminole in program history to win the award, joining Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke. He became the first redshirt freshman to win a Heisman Trophy and the national championship in the same season.
