When rising second-year pro and Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young got to speak over the summer, he made a point to give new coach Dave Canales props on the way he’s installed his system.

Dave Canales only spent one year as an offensive coordinator at Tampa Bay but was able to parlay that opportunity into his first NFL head coaching job with Carolina. Meanwhile, Bryce Young is only in his second season after an extremely tough year one both for him an the team, but he’s hopeful a marriage with Canales could produce more success.

When asked about the ins and outs of adapting to a new coach during media availability, Young offered a thorough explanation of how detailed Canales has been in establishing new concepts with the team.

“It’s great. I think he’s done a great job of — his approach towards it was, at first, he was transparent,” said Young, then detailing exactly how Canales instilled his system.

“Like, we’re going to have these concepts and we’re going to have a day one install. The first time we’ve seen it, when we first came together, first week of phase one, we’re going to walk through things or jog through things whatever it may be, but we’re going to stick to the drawings, we’re going to figure that out.

“And then, alright, this is our second time through. So now we can get to that 200-level teaching of alright, here’s the little nuances of routes, here’s the concepts.

“Now, having repped things three, four times, multiple days in the script, him being there for this. It’s time for us to learn, time for us to grow. So the little things — now is the time to have the conversation and get as many reps as we can.”

Bryce Young is already down with Dave Canales’ multi-step process for learning the new playbook, and he thanks his head coach’s ability to communicate effectively with the players.

“I think him having that constant line of communication with all of us, of the little intricate details, it gives us a really clear picture of what we’re doing, what we’re working towards, and it’ll definitely pay off in in the end.”

QB1 is a believer in the new Panthers leader, which is a great sign ahead of a crucial year two for Young and year one for Canales. These unproven up-and-comers ought to have a chip on their shoulder this fall.
