Bryce Young evaluates the progress he's made since being drafted by Panthers
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has only been a member of the franchise for a little under two months. But the No. 1 overall pick has had ample opportunities to make some improvements and impact during that time during offseason workouts and rookie minicamp.
The former Heisman Trophy winner spoke this week about the progress he has made and how he evaluates himself in terms of goals.
“I’m not huge as far as long-term goals, long-term checklists or timeline for me,” Young said. “I try to take things day by day and I base things day by day off of the people I’m around, off of my coaches, off of my teammates. What are we going to get better at tomorrow. How did this practice go? What do we want to improve at? What went well that we can stay consistent on? What stuff didn’t go as well that we want to improve on?”
“And I think that’s a day by day thing. I think that changes every day. For me, I don’t think there’s one small detail I’m going to be focused on for a long period of time. Sometimes it ends up like that. Sometimes it’s something that’s consistent, is a recurring theme and you end up focused on it for a while. But, for me, I take things day by day. I lean on my coaching staff and my teammates to figure out what I got to get better at, that we as a unit have to get better at. And I think that’s really a day by day reevaluation.”
Young arrived in Carolina with large expectations as the franchise’s highest-drafted quarterback since Cam Newton went No. 1 in the 2011 NFL Draft. While Newton’s tenure was probably a little more topsy-turvy than the franchise likely would have liked, the former Auburn great did lead the Panthers to a Super Bowl appearance and win an MVP award.

But ever since Newton left the team after the 2019 season, Carolina has been looking for another quarterback to take control of the franchise. The Panthers are hoping that Young can be that player.
He is already listed as No. 1 on the depth chart and is the frontrunner for the starting quarterback job for Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. Veteran Andy Dalton and second-year pro Matt Corral are the two other quarterbacks currently on the 2023 Panthers roster.
