Following a visit on Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills are expected to sign former Chiefs and Packers wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Valdes-Scantling is in Buffalo today and the two sides are “closing in” on a deal that would place the former fifth-rounder on the Bills for the 2024 season.

The former Packers draft pick is now heading to his third NFL team in seven seasons. He played four for Green Bay before entering free agency and signing a three-year deal with Kansas City. The three-year deal was for $30 million. By cutting him after two seasons, the Chiefs cleared $12 million in cap space for the 2024 season.

While with the Chiefs, Valdes-Scantling won two Super Bowl rings. He scored two touchdowns for Kansas City during their run to Super Bowl LVII and scored another during Super Bowl LVIII to help lift the Chiefs over the 49ers.

Over his first six seasons in the league, Valdes-Scantling has racked up 186 catches in regular-season games for 3,155 yards and 16 touchdowns. In 2023, he played in 16 regular-season games, tallying 21 catches, which was a career-low, along with 315 yards and one touchdown. The Packers drafted Valdes-Scantling with the No. 174 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of USF.

The Buffalo Bills could use Valdes-Scantling’s services after some turnover cleared out their wide receivers room this offseason. Gabe Davis went to the Jaguars and Stefon Diggs to the Texans, but they did draft former Florida State star Keon Coleman with their first-round selection.

More on the 2024 NFL offseason, free agency

The NFL 2024 calendar year began at 4 p.m. ET on March 13. At that time, contracts running through 2023 officially ran out, making those players free agents. Prior to the beginning of free agency, teams had a chance to designate one franchise or transition tag player, starting on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. ET and ending on March 5. Beginning March 11 through March 13 teams could enter into a legal negotiation with players who will become unrestricted free agents.

In addition to NFL free agency, the new year also marked the beginning of all trades being made official by the league office. April 19 marked the deadline to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets. On April 24, the deadline for teams to match restricted free agent offers sheets hit. Following the restricted free agent deadline followed the 2024 NFL Draft, which ran from April 25-27.
