Buffalo Bills signing former Tar Heels wide receiver Mack Hollins amid free agency

The Buffalo Bills are picking up another weapon for QB Josh Allen, signing former Falcons wide receiver Mack Hollins on Wednesday, according to NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler. It’s expected to be a one-year deal. Hollins spent one season with the Falcons, tallying 18 catches, 251 yards, and no scores in 13 games played in 2023.

Hollins came into the NFL out of North Carolina in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The Philadelphia Eagles scooped him up with the No. 118 overall selection. In his first season, he caught only one touchdown, but he received a Super Bowl ring for being a part of the journey.

After spending three seasons in Philadelphia, the Miami Dolphins claimed Hollins off waivers. He’d play there for the better part of two seasons and set a new career mark in touchdowns with four. The wideout then moved to the Raiders where he hauled in 57 receptions on 94 targets, accumulating 690 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns in 2022.

The 2024 season will be Hollins’ eighth in the league. He’ll turn 31 at the start of the regular season slate. Combined through his first seven seasons, he has 131 receptions, 1,691 yards, and 10 touchdowns.

Bills add quarterback Mitch Trubisky

On top of another weapon at receiver, the Bills also signed some backup help for Josh Allen. Mitch Trubisky agreed to terms with the Buffalo Bills this week, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo. It will be his second stint with the organization.

Trubisky was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers in February, which gave him time to find his new team before the beginning of free agency. It was a decision made after the two parties met to discuss his future in Pittsburgh.

He contributed 1,884 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions to the Steelers over 12 games played across his two seasons with the franchise. Trubisky amassed over 12,000 career passing yards and has thrown 72 touchdowns in the first seven years of his career. He started at quarterback for four seasons with the Chicago Bears after being selected No. 2 overall in 2017. 

More on the 2024 NFL offseason, free agency

The NFL 2024 calendar year begins at 4 p.m. ET on March 13. At that time, contracts running through 2023 officially run out, making those players free agents. Prior to the beginning of free agency, teams will have a chance to designate one franchise or transition tag player, starting on Feb. 20 at 4 p.m. ET and ending on March 5. Beginning March 11 through March 13 teams can enter into a legal negotiation with players who will become unrestricted free agents.

In addition to NFL free agency, the new year also marks the beginning of all trades being made official by the league office. April 19 marks the deadline to sign restricted free agents to offer sheets. On April 24, the deadline for teams to match restricted free agent offers sheets hits. Following the restricted free agent deadline follows the 2024 NFL Draft, which runs from April 25-27.
