Report: Cade Cunningham agrees to five-year, $224 million rookie extension with Pistons
Cade Cunningham signed a new five-year, $224 million max rookie extension with the Detroit Pistons, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
“Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham has agreed on a five-year, $224 million maximum rookie extension that could become worth as much as $269 million, his agents Jeff Schwartz and James Dunleavy of Excel Basketball tell ESPN,” Wojnarowski wrote on Twitter.
In three seasons, Cunningham steadily improved year-to-year, despite only playing 12 games during the 2022-23 season. This past year (62 games), Cunningham averaged 22.7 points per game, 7.5 assists per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, shot 44.9% from the floor and 35.5% from three-point range.
New Pistons president Trajan Langdon has expressed his intention to build around Cunningham and find pieces that can lighten his workload.
“As for Cade, he and I have had some really good conversations thus far,” Langdon said, via NBA.com. “High-character human being, mature beyond his years and a big time basketball player at a young age, averaging 23 and 7 assists last year. We’re going to put a group around him that can bolster his growth.”

Cade Cunningham signs new deal with Pistons
Going into next year, Cunningham will play under new coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who signed a four-year deal. Detroit has not won more than 23 games in a season since 2018-19.
The Pistons selected Cunningham with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft after he spent one season at Oklahoma State.
In his lone season with the Cowboys (27 games), Cunningham averaged 20.1 points per game, 6.2 rebounds per game, 3.5 assists per game, shot 43.8% from thre floor and 40% from three-point range.
As a member of the Class of 2020, Cunningham was a five-star recruit out of Arlington (Texas) Bowie, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He was the No. 1 overall prospect in the state, the No. 1 point guard in the class and the No. 1 overall prospect in the class.
