Aliyah Boston explains excitement about possibly playing with Caitlin Clark for Indiana Fever

With less than 10 days to go until the WNBA Draft, it looks almost like a lock that the Indiana Fever will select Caitlin Clark with the No. 1 overall pick. It’s the second straight year the Fever secured the top selection after taking Aliyah Boston out of South Carolina last year, meaning there could be a dynamic duo forming in Indy.

Before they play for the same team, though, Boston is serving as an analyst on ESPN’s coverage of the Final Four. As a result, she’ll be on the sidelines when Iowa takes on her alma mater with a title on the line and get another up-close look at – potentially – her future teammate.

“Potentially” is the key word there, of course, since nothing is official.

“I don’t make decisions,” Boston joked during Saturday’s open practice. “I’m not in the big room.”

Much of the attention around Clark’s game goes to her shooting. That’s understandable considering she’s set NCAA scoring records and three-pointers records as she rewrote the books. But Boston said that’s not what excites her most about pairing up with Clark.

It’s her ability to distribute.

“I think you just see everything,” Boston said. “Coach Staley talked about how she passes the ball, and I think that’s the biggest thing. Yes, you know she can shoot the ball, you know that she’s going to get a lot of attention. And because of that, her ability to find the right pass, make the pass, the timing of the pass, you see it all.

“Her teammates run the floor, being able to get out because you know when she has the ball in her hand, she’s going to find you.”

Throughout this season, Clark and Hannah Stuelke have formed quite a duo to help lead Iowa to the national championship for the second straight year. It could be a similar dynamic she’d have with Boston in Indiana, and Carolyn Peck understands why she’d be so excited.

“You’ve got to be licking your chops when you see Hannah Stuelke get the basketball,” Peck told Boston. “If you just sprint the floor, Caitlin Clark’s going to get it to you.”

The WNBA Draft is coming up April 15, but Clark’s focus is squarely on Monday’s national championship game against South Carolina. It’s a rematch of last year’s Final Four when Clark’s Hawkeyes beat Boston’s Gamecocks, but the stakes are much higher this time around.
