Caleb Williams addresses concerns about his height

Caleb Williams‘ size hasn’t been a massive topic of discussion for analysts when rating the former USC star out of college. His numbers speak for themselves — which is why he appeared to be surprised when asked whether or not he thinks it will factor into his future in the NFL.

“It’s the first time I’m hearing about my height and size,” Williams responded. “I’m around Aaron Rodgers‘ size and maybe weight too. I’m about 215-220 and 6’1”-6’2.”

During Aaron Rodgers’ NFL Combine experience back in 2005, the New York Jets QB weighed in a 223 pounds and measured 6-foot-1 and 3/5. Williams measured 6-foot-1 and 1/8 and weighed 214 pounds on Saturday.

For comparison, Williams doesn’t measure up to the likes of former No. 1 overall quarterback selections such as Joe Burrow (6’3) and Trevor Lawrence (6’6), but they did each weigh in around the 210-220 range during their respective combines. Additionally, he eclipses other recent top picks like Bryce Young and Kyler Murray, both of whom are 5-foot-10.

In fact, Williams’ NFL Combine measurables stack up nearly identical to Baker Mayfield‘s, the No. 1 pick from the 2018 NFL Draft, at 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds.

Of course, their height and weight never stopped any of these quarterbacks from achieving success in their respective careers. All are first-round draftees (aside from Williams, who will join that list next month), five are Heisman Trophy winners, two won national championships in college and Aaron Rodgers, so far, is the only to have claimed a Super Bowl victory.

Scouts have seen first-hand what Williams has been able to do at his size. In 2023, Williams passed for 3,633 yards and 30 touchdowns, with five interceptions this past season. He added 11 additional touchdowns on the ground. Those numbers were some of the best in the country last year, but they didn’t rival 2022’s statistics when Williams won the Heisman after passing for more than 4,500 yards and 42 touchdowns.

His performance at the college football level and the potential many scouts see in him is the reason Williams has been looked at for the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. If many believe the first team on the board will take him — concern for height and weight would have been thrown out well before that point.

The 2024 NFL Draft is scheduled to take place in Detroit from April 25 through April 27.
