Marquette King recruits Cam Newton XFL's Arlington Renegades for 'reps'

Cam Newton still has the itch to play football since he threw at Auburn’s Pro Day earlier this month. Former Raiders punter Marquette King took it a step further.

King plays in the XFL now, punting for the Arlington Renegades. It sounds like he wanted Newton to join him for the remainder of the season.

King took to social media and tried to recruit Newton to the latest edition of the league to get back into game shape.

“We have 4 games left! (At least) come get the reps!,” King wrote on Twitter, tagging the XFL, his team and Newton.

Newton and the XFL? It would certainly make for must-see television since a player of his stature would take the field in the spring.

Newton did not play in the NFL in 2022. After a brief stint with the New England Patriots, he returned to the Carolina Panthers in 2021, originally as a backup.

Newton got back into the starting lineup but was eventually benched in the latter half of the regular season.

The former Auburn star and Heisman Trophy winner released a video on social media before he returned to his alma mater for the Pro Day. In the video, Newton asked why there were so many other quarterbacks with jobs over him.

“Tell me how these randoms keep getting jobs? Don’t worry about it, imma show you. I can’t wait to show you. I love it. I love it,” Newton said. “… I’m seeing a lot of people toying with the idea, and it’s official. I will be throwing at Auburn’s Pro Day.”

Those stats don’t do justice to the Newton we came to know during his time at Auburn. In his lone season, Newton compiled 50 total touchdowns on 4,327 yards from scrimmage to go along with an undefeated record, a national championship and a Heisman Trophy before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Of course, Newton went on to have one of the best tenures at quarterback in Carolina Panthers history. Newton threw for 32,382 career passing yards to go with 194 touchdowns over 11 seasons in the league. Maybe four games in the XFL could boost Newton’s free agent stock.

His best season came in 2015 when he led Carolina to a 15-1 record and took them all the way to Super Bowl 50 before losing to the Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos. Newton put up career numbers through the air and on the ground that season, earning him NFL MVP honors for the first and only time in his career.
