Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle Cameron Heyward raised eyebrows Monday when he retweeted a statement criticizing head coach Mike Tomlin. However, Heyward took to Twitter later in the day to explain himself, saying the retweet was not intentional.

“Ok let me be clear when I say that was a complete accident,” Heyward’s tweet read. “I challenge myself to be better and don’t look to point the finger. These losses I take personal and I need to be better. My head coach and teammates are the ones I care about. I’m on to Tampa see ya Sunday.”

The retweet in question was a reply from a fan after former Steelers safety Ryan Clark was quoted saying quarterback Kenny Pickett was the “only one that wanted some” in Sunday’s 38-3 loss to the Bills.

“BS…I can’t stand Tomlin, and he’s a fraud and clown that’s been carried by Ben (Roethlisberger) his ENTIRE career,” the fan wrote. “However…Cam Heyward was running 30 yards downfield (again) to make tackles the LBs wouldn’t make. Shut up Ryan.”

Things have not gone well in Pittsburgh this season, as the Steelers are off to a 1-4 start, their worst since 2019. That was also the same season that Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback for 18 seasons, missed all but two games due to injury.

Roethlisberger retired in the offseason, marking the beginning of a new era in Pittsburgh. The Steelers began the season with Mitch Trubisky as their starter, but made the change to Pickett in Week 5.

Unfortunately, Pickett’s first career start ended in a blowout as Pittsburgh failed to score a touchdown. Heyward finished with five tackles and a pass defended in the win, and the defense gave up four touchdowns to Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Mike Tomlin has never finished with a record under .500 in his 15 full seasons as the Steelers coach, 11 of which have come with Cameron Heyward on the roster. But based on the way this season has started, that appears to be in serious jeopardy.

The Steelers will hope they can turn their season around starting Sunday, when they face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 1 p.m. ET.
