The funny thing about golf is there are endless possibilities of where a player’s ball can end up on a given hole. On Saturday afternoon, former Wake Forest star Cameron Young showed us one that we’ve never seen before in his third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday. On the 10th hole at Los Angeles Country Club, Young hit his drive and the ball somehow bounced and landed in the golf ball holder. The odds of this happening have to be something like one in a trillion.

Check out the video below from The USGA’s Twitter account.

The hole was a Par 4 and Young finished with a four on the hole, so he wasn’t penalized at all. He played well enough to make the cut this weekend, but not much better than that. He currently sits at even par after completing his third round (T33), 10 shots off the lead.

While Young is unquestionably one of the most talented players in the game today, he’s struggled a bit lately. He missed the cut at the 2023 PGA Championship and this year’s Memorial Tournament. While he’s not in contention this weekend at the U.S. Open, there’s still one round left for him to make up some ground on Sunday.

Cameron Young’s rookie season in 2022 was remarkable

Simply put, Cameron Young accomplished things as a rookie that will be tough for any golfer to ever match. He posted five runner-up finishes at the Sanderson Farms Championship, the Genesis Invitational, the Wells Fargo Championship, the British Open, and the Rocket Mortgage Classic. His five second place finishes as a rookie were the most by any player in a single-season over the last 40 years. Vijay Singh was the last person to accomplish the feat in 2003. Not only that, Young also finished tied for third at the RBC Heritage and the PGA Championship. That’s two top three finishes in the majors during his rookie season–simply remarkable. The former Wake Forest star easily won 2022 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year honors.

He won $6.52 million in prize money as a rookie, shattering the PGA Tour record that was set by Xander Schauffele ($4.31 million).

It will be tough for Young to match the brilliance of his rookie season for the rest of his career, but big things will be expected of him for years to come in the game of professional golf.

Golf can be a funny game and even the most talented of players can mysteriously play bad for long stretches without understanding why (please see Rickie Fowler–who didn’t even qualify for the U.S. Open the past two years). Keep in mind, he’s had eight Top 5 finishes in the majors throughout his career.

Speaking of Fowler, heading into the third round, he was the leader at this year’s U.S. Open, sitting at 10-under par. He acknowledged that leading midway through the US Open is nice, but it doesn’t mean anything. And he’s absolutely right. It should be an exciting final two days of golf at one of the finest pieces of real estate in the United States.
