Now the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Jonathan Gannon was the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator the last two seasons. Last season, that meant producing an excellent pass rush on the way to a Super Bowl appearance.

Now, with the benefit of hindsight, Gannon has an admission to make. He’s the one responsible for the Philadelphia Eagles losing the Super Bowl. It’s still a tough loss for him and he goes back to watch the tape of what happened all the time.

“I’m the reason we lost the Super Bowl,” Gannon told The Athletic.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia offense was fantastic in the Super Bowl. Hurts had four touchdowns and gained nearly 400 yards by himself. That was part of a 35-point effort by the offense. However, the defense gave up 38.

Today, Gannon can remember every snap. He looked at the Kadarius Toney touchdown with 12:08 left as a play the defense should have been able to stop. Then, the Skyy Moore touchdown with 9:26 left. It was a similar play and the defensive playcall put the Eagles out of position to stop the play.

“The second one is on the call, truthfully,” Gannon admitted. “That’s a tough pass. Like, if I was the (defensive backs) coach, we probably would’ve busted that, too. That’s how I always kinda think, you know? If I was coaching it, would we be OK? Probably not.”

That was all in a 17-point Kansas City fourth quarter that saw the Chiefs take the lead to win the Super Bowl. For the Eagles, it was a devastating loss. For Jonathan Gannon, even as he’s with a new team in Arizona, it’s a loss that he still thinks about all the time.

Jonathan Gannon isn’t naming a starting quarterback

Reports have come out that the Arizona Cardinals are starting Josh Dobbs at quarterback for Week 1. Behind Dobbs will be rookie quarterback Clayton Tune, a fifth round pick out of Houston. However, Jonathan Gannon doesn’t want to name a starter yet.

“I’m not going to name a starter, because I think it’s a competitive advantage for us going to Washington. But we’ll know who the starter is,” Gannon said.

“I don’t think it’s anything he didn’t show us. I think it was just looking at OTAs and then training camp and the games and the full body of work, we just feel like this is the best way to go.”
