Carolina Panthers formally place QB Matt Corral on season-ending IR
The Carolina Panthers have decided to put injured quarterback Matt Corral on injured reserve. It’s a move that will end his rookie season before the regular season even begins.
Had Carolina not put Matt Corral on injured reserve, the team would have needed to leave him on its 53-man roster. To avoid that, he was added to IR. This means that whatever development Corral is able to go through in his rookie season, it will be off the field.
Matt Corral suffered a Lisfranc injury to his left foot during the Carolina Panther’s preseason game against the New England Patriots. Returning from the injury this season was deemed unlikely.

This is the second major injury for Matt Corral in the calendar year. He chose to play in the Sugar Bowl for Ole Miss, where he suffered an ankle sprain. However, the injury looked worse in real-time.
The move was announced via Twitter by Carolina. It also leaves three quarterbacks on the roster. Baker Mayfield will be the starter, while Sam Darnold and PJ Walker are on the roster as backups.

Baker Mayfield will start for Carolina
The Carolina Panthers have been on the lookout for their next starting quarterback. In 2021, they brought in Sam Darnold, hoping to spark his once-promising career. However, things didn’t improve on the field. Then, in the 2022 offseason, they drafted Matt Corral and brought in former first overall pick Baker Mayfield.
In the end, it would be Baker Mayfield who Carolina named its starting quarterback. He took a pay cut upon coming to Carolina and is now looking to prove those who doubted him in Cleveland wrong.
Baker Mayfield played through injuries in 2021 and his production suffered for it. However, when healthy, Mayfield showed plenty of potential, even getting Cleveland to the postseason for the first time since 2002.
