The Carolina Panthers are making a concerted effort to bolster their special teams, according to a recent report from a major ESPN NFL Insider.

“Panthers interviewing former Bears’ special teams coordinator Chris Tabor and former Broncos’ special teams coordinator Tom McMahon for the same job in Carolina, per sources,” Adam Schefter tweeted on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the team fired three assistant coaches, including special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn, offensive line coach Pat Meyer and defensive line coach Frank Okam.

Panthers expected to interview Colts RB coach for OC

The Carolina Panthers are expected to interview Indianapolis Colts running backs coach Scottie Montgomery for their open offensive coordinator position, according to a report from Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated.

Montgomery, 43, is in his first season as the Colts’ running backs coach. Prior to being hired by Indianapolis, Montgomery was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Maryland from 2019-2020.

Montgomery is the latest candidate reported to fill the Carolina Panthers vacancy.

A Shelby, North Carolina native who played wide receiver at Duke and in the NFL, Montgomery was the head coach at East Carolina from 2016-18 before going to Maryland.

Now with the Colts, Montgomery has served as star running back Jonathan Taylor’s position coach. Taylor has put together a strong season in Indy – having rushed for 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns on 332 carries.

The Panthers are in search of an offensive coordinator after firing Joe Brady back on Dec. 5.

Carolina Panthers go through initial round of interviews with potential OC candidates

As the Panthers work to find a new offensive coordinator, they’re getting through their first round of interviews. According to multiple reports, they’ve interviewed two candidates so far.

Indianapolis Colts wide receivers coach Mike Groh and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak conducted virtual interviews with the Carolina Panthers. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport first reported the interviews took place.

Groh has been with the Colts since 2020 after two years as the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator. After coaching in college from 2001-12, he’s bee in the NFL coaching ranks since 2013.

Kubiak started with the Vikings as quarterbacks coach in 2019 before moving to offensive coordinator this season. He also worked as an offensive assistant under his dad, Gary, with the Denver Broncos before heading to Minnesota.

The Carolina Panthers have been working to replace Brady, whom they let go in December. Pep Hamilton is also reportedly a potential candidate, as are Bill O’Brien and Jay Gruden.
