Carolina Panthers sign quarterback Jack Plummer to practice squad
The Carolina Panthers are signing rookie quarterback Jack Plummer back to their practice squad, according to Mike Garafalo of NFL Network.
Plummer, who went undrafted in April’s NFL Draft, was waived by Carolina Tuesday ahead of the 53-man roster cutdown. The Panthers currently have two quarterbacks, Bryce Young and Andy Dalton, on the active roster with Jake Luton on injured reserve.
Plummer, 24, returns after doing enough to impress first-year head coach Dave Canales during training camp and the preseason. Plummer got plenty of work in Carolina’s three exhibitions, completing 43-of-68 passes for 406 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The former Louisville signal-caller was particularly impressive in the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills, completing 21-of-29 passes for 278 yards and two scores. Plummer recorded a Pro Football Focus grade of 90.4, second highest among all Panthers.

“Jack really made a statement for himself last game,” Canales said. “And I value the emergency third quarterback, but again, that’s a spot on the 53-man roster. So that becomes a real sticking point. Based on depth and need at other positions, can we afford to carry three quarterbacks on the 53. We’re right in the middle of that conversation.

“Jack made it harder by his performance in Buffalo. I love that. That’s exactly the situation we want to be in. I want guys to force hard conversations and hard decisions by [general manager] Dan [Morgan] and I.”
Panthers bring back Jack Plummer, busy on the waiver wire
Carolina had first dibs on the waiver wire and wasted no time getting Plummer back and making several other additions. Thus far, the Panthers have claimed linebacker Jamie Sheriff (Seattle Seahawks), cornerback Shemar Bartholomew (New York Jets), cornerback Keenan Isaac (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields (Washington Commanders), offensive tackle Jarrett Kingston (San Francisco 49ers) and linebacker Jon Rhattigan (Seahawks).
Per Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, Carolina plans to bring back receiver turned tight end Jordan Matthews. Like Plummer, Matthews did not make the initial 53-man roster. Undrafted rookie wideout Jalen Coker, who made the 53-man roster, is being waived Wednesday.
