The Carolina Panthers have added NFL veteran quarterback to the roster for training camp. On Saturday, the team announced that Jake Luton is joining the team.

Luton, a former Oregon State standout, was signed as the team’s fourth quarterback for training camp. It allows the team to manage the workload a little better through practice, as well as through preseason action.

Carolina already had Bryce Young, Matt Corral and Andy Dalton on the roster. It’s expected that Young and Corral will take a majority of the snaps during preseason contests, per the team’s website.

Luton has played in three career games during his time in the NFL. He started three times for the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2020 campaign. The quarterback threw for 624 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions.

Luton has also had stops with the Seattle Seahawks, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints.

The Jaguars selected Luton in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He spent just one full season with the team and has bounced around over the past two years.

Luton posted an impressive final season at Oregon State in 2019. That season, he threw for 2,714 yards with 28 touchdowns and just three interceptions. The Beavers ended the year with a 5-7 record.

Bryce Young named Panthers starting QB

The Panthers didn’t waste any time in naming a starting quarterback during training camp. Head coach Frank Reich announced that No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young has won the job and will be the leader under center moving forward.

“I respect the coaches and I want to do whatever I can to play whatever role it is I’m called on to help the team,” Young said, per ESPN. “So [being called the starter] means a lot. For me, it’s making sure I take things day by day. I want to keep improving, keep growing.”

Expectations for Young will be high in 2023 — as they typically are for a No. 1 overall pick. But it’s something that doesn’t really bother the former Alabama star.

“Lofty expectations aren’t something new,” Young said. “I took the same approach in college. I’ve always taken the same approach. I’ve had experience taking the same approach to whatever expectations are. Whatever people are talking about, it is what it is.

“It’s stuff that I can’t control, and making sure that my teammates, my coaches, what we set in the building, that’s who I listen to. That’s the expectations that we come up with together and build together as a team, and sticking to that. I’ve had experience doing that in the past. So it’ll be obviously a different level of different challenges, but I’ll keep the same mindset.”
