Ahead of their matchup with the Washington Football Team on Sunday, the Carolina Panthers have their injury report available from Wednesday’s practice. Quarterback Sam Darnold did not appear on the injury report this week after being placed on the injured reserve list. Defensive end Brian Burns is also no longer listed with an injury after his foot injury did not force him to miss last week’s game.

With Darnold out, the Panthers made the decision to bring back Cam Newton, who won an MVP award with Carolina in 2015 and led them to a Super Bowl appearance.

Panthers injury report against Washington

Did Not Practice – Panthers: DE Marquis Haynes Sr.(Foot)

Haynes has been effective as a pass rushing threat for the Panthers, despite playing limited snaps this season. In 2020 he had the third highest sack total for the team with 4.0 sacks. He’s on pace to repeat that number with 2.0 sacks in 10 games this season.

Limited Participation – Panthers: LB Frankie Luvu(Shoulder)

Luvu was limited on Wednesday as he continues to deal with a shoulder injury, but it did not keep him out of their game with Arizona. Luvu only played five snaps however, his fewest of the season. In just five snaps, he recorded two tackles and one solo.

Full Participation – Panthers: CB Rashaan Melvin(Hand), CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III(Toe)

In some good news for the Panthers’ depth against Washington, cornerbacks Melvin and Thomas-Oliver III were both full participants in practice.

Despite multiple major injuries throughout the season, the Panthers hope their injury report will stay as thin as it was on Wednesday until Sunday’s game.

Darnold’s future and Cam Newton

“The Carolina Panthers announced that Sam Darnold is out four to six weeks with a shoulder injury, but the team is operating as if the quarterback will not play again this season, league sources tell ESPN,” wrote Schefter. “One source told ESPN this past week that the Panthers “know Sam is out for the season,” which contributed to Carolina signing quarterback Cam Newton to a one-year contract that essentially guarantees him $6 million.”

When the Panthers traded three picks for Darnold, they hoped he’d be a reclamation project for the ages. While things looked great after three weeks, we’ve seen the former USC quarterback revert to some ugly tendencies since then.

With Darnold’s future murky, Schefter went on to say that this might not just be a one-year fling with Newton. In a wild turn of events, the former face of the franchise has a chance to be the guy once again.

“Newton will have a chance to cement his status as Carolina’s starter for the remainder of this year and potentially the 2022 season as well, sources tell ESPN,” wrote Schefter. “If Newton plays well this season, he would become the favorite to be Carolina’s starting quarterback in 2022.”
