Carson Wentz is headed back to the division where he played his best football in the NFL, but the league leader in interceptions had to chime in with a cryptic, simple tweet shortly after the news broke that the Indianapolis Colts traded the former Eagles QB to Washington.

Here was the social media post from Dallas Cowboys star cornerback Trevon Diggs at 3:23 p.m. on Wednesday. Adam Schefter broke the Wentz news at 1:47 p.m. so it’s highly unlikely this was a coincidence.

Diggs has a good reason for being excited at Carson Wentz’s return to the NFC East. As a rookie, the Cowboys defensive back intercepted the former Eagles quarterback three times over the course of two games between the division rivals.

Right below the Diggs tweet appears to be a Wentz supporter flashing a nice throw by the former Eagles QB where he clearly beats the Alabama Crimson Tide rookie at the time. And fans of the Dallas star corner didn’t waste any time, because the third tweet in the series is Carson Wentz throwing a bad ball and of course, Diggs hauls in the pick.

Last season, the Dallas Cowboys ball-hawk led the league with 11 interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl nod and a spot on the All-Pro First Team.

Wentz struggled at times his rookie season coming out of North Dakota State, but looked like the next elite young quarterback beginning in 2017 where he finished the year with 3, 296 yards, 33 touchdowns and a passer rating of 101.9. The Eagles cruises to a 13-3 record which included a nine-game win streak with Carson Wentz at the helm. But a brutal Week 14 injury meant it was up to backup Nick Foles to carry the team to the promised land, and he did just that, in one of the more improbable Super Bowl runs in the history of the NFL.

Carson Wentz still put together decent seasons on the stat sheet in 2018 and 2019, but injuries remained a major concern. HIs 2020 outing was clearly a major regression, prompting Philly to move on.

Finally, with a fresh start in Indy last season, Wentz played well at times in 2021 but struggled with simple throws in other games. Inconsistency plagued him. 3,563 passing yards for the Colts. He had a 62.4% completion percentage this season while throwing 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in 2021.

Indianapolis Colts part ways with Wentz after one season

The Indianapolis Colts have opted to trade quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Colts are getting “a package of picks” from Washington, including two third-round picks, per the report.

Washington was looking for a new signal-caller following another seven-win season under Ron Rivera. The Commanders looked far and wide for a new quarterback this offseason, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

“The Commanders called on every QB and end up with Carson Wentz from the #Colts in exchange for mid-round picks,” Rapoport shared on Twitter. “They weren’t going to wait for Jimmy G, didn’t land Russell Wilson. Now end up with Carson.”

The Colts will get this year’s third-round pick from Washington and next year’s third-round pick as well, which could convert to a second-round pick depending on incentives.

The former Philadelphia Eagles starter will likely take over for Taylor Heinecke in Washington. Heinecke finished 19th in the league in passing yards in 2021 with 20 touchdowns, 15 interceptions. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz finished 18th with 3,563 passing yards for the Colts. He had a 62.4% completion percentage this season while throwing 27 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

Wentz, a former first-rounder out of North Dakota State, heads into his seventh year in the league. He made $20 million in guaranteed money in 2021 with the Colts. Indianapolis finished the year at 9-8 behind the Tennessee Titans in the division
