CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore reacts to controversial pass interference call in Bengals vs. Chiefs
Sunday’s NFL slate saw yet another classic between the Kansas City Chiefs and Cincinnati Bengals. Both teams battled until the end, with the Chiefs’ Harrison Butker drilling a game-winning field goal in the final seconds. The play was setup by a pass interference penalty on the Bengals, when the Chiefs had the ball on 4th and 15.
The controversial call drew plenty of reactions online, but CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore reacted to the play and said it was the right call.
“That’s early contact and it is a catchable ball,” Steratore noted on the broadcast.
The call was made on Bengals safety Daijahn Anthony, who hit Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice a bit early in the back, as both were jumping for the ball in mid-air. It extended the Kansas City drive, allowing them to get into field goal range, where Harrison Butker drilled a 51-yard game winning kick as time expired. The Chiefs won the game, 26-25. It was yet another classic between the two AFC rivals.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes had an uncharacteristically sloppy performance. He completed 18 of 25 passes for 151 yards, while tossing in two touchdowns with two interceptions. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow completed 23 of 36 passes for 258 yards, while tossing in two touchdowns.

One important injury to note. Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco had 19 carries for 90 rushing yards, before exiting with a right ankle injury. He was nearly in tears in the locker room, before being spotted leaving the stadium in a walking boot and crutches. We’ll have to see what his status is moving forward, but he’s been a massive piece of the Chiefs’ offensive attack over the years. Pacheco has racked up over 830 rushing yards in back-to-back seasons for the franchise.
Kansas City wideout Rashee Rice had another solid day at the office, hauling in five catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Bengals’ receiver Ja’Marr Chase had a rough day, only hauling in four catches for 35 receiving yards. Tight end Mike Gesicki led Cincinnati in receiving yards, hauling in seven catches for 91 receiving yards.
