Last week, news broke that Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could be out until training camp after undergoing foot surgery this offseason. That’s leading to questions about who could replace him if he winds up missing more time or, even, gets cut.

According to CBS Sports, one option could be in the owner’s suite.

Tom Brady came up on the list of potential directions the Raiders could go if they end up cutting Garoppolo. The former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback announced his retirement for the second time following an up-and-down 2022 season with the Bucs and is currently in the process of acquiring a stake in the Raiders. He currently works with owner Mark Davis as a co-owner of the WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces.

Brady’s ownership stake in the Raiders is still subject to NFL approval, but if it goes through, he’d be a “limited partner” in the organization. That decision hasn’t stopped speculation about a potential NFL return, though, and an offshore sportsbook lists Brady as the favorite to replace Garoppolo, depending on what happens with his situation.

Las Vegas signed Garoppolo to a three-year, $72.5 million contract earlier this offseason, and the team was reportedly aware he needed surgery. However, he reportedly failed the physical, which led the team to rework the deal and put a clause in that states the team can “terminate the agreement with no further obligation, ‘for any reason related to the Waiver and Release attached as Addendum G,'” which is a “waiver and release” due to the injury, according to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio.

Who else could replace Jimmy Garoppolo if he gets cut by the Las Vgas Raiders?

CBS Sports listed three other names besides Brady who could fill Garoppolo’s shoes if the Raiders end up cutting him. One is former Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz, who’s looking for his fourth team in as many years after receiving his release this offseason.

Another potential option is former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Ryan, who also received his release and is pursuing a broadcasting career with CBS. After news broke of that deal, Ryan made it clear it doesn’t mean he’s retiring from the game.

Finally, CBS Sports listed Teddy Bridgewater as someone who could jump in. He played five games with the Miami Dolphins last year and is no stranger to the AFC West after spending 2021 with the Denver Broncos.
