This Phoenix race has been sloppy in the first two stages. Chase Briscoe was involved in a HUGE wreck in Stage 2. Right after Michael McDowell brought out the caution for a flat right rear, the NASCAR field got wadded up in the back.

Carson Hocevar, who had been up in the front for much of the race, was involved. Justin Haley was also involved, his Spire Motorsports teammate. Chase Briscoe got pinched and it was over from there.

Cole Custer, Riley Herbst, Brad Keselowski, and others were involved. A big mess of cars on the track. Some made it through, others did not. Lap 99 and chaos broke out.

This wreck took Hocevar, Haley, Herbst, Custer, Keselowski, Briscoe, and Shane van Gisbergen out of the race. Noah Gragson was also involved but has continued racing.

There have been a few incidents on track today. First, Katherine Legge spun out by herself early in the race as she got used to being in traffic with other drivers. Then Michael McDowell blew a tire before this big Lap 99 wreck.

Chase Briscoe was in the wrong place at the wrong time. However, this isn’t the only time we have seen a three, four-wide move lead to a caution after the Legge spin.. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was involved in a similar incident that didn’t end up in a large wreck.

In his interview, after he left the care center, Briscoe took fault for the wreck. During his explanation of the wreck, he said he plans to learn from it and not make the same mistake.

Chase Briscoe lucky to have 100 point penalty reversed

Now that we have seen Chase Briscoe DNF out of the Phoenix race, a track he has won at before, it is interesting to think about that 100-point penalty he received. After Daytona, Briscoe found himself in a major hole.

However, a few weeks later his penalty was reversed. What NASCAR believed was a modified single-source part ended up being a manufacturing issue. It was no fault of Joe Gibbs Racing.

While Chase Briscoe and crew chief James Small will be behind the ball a bit to start the first month of the season, it could be so much worse. Earning those points back from the penalty appeal was massive and could have season-long implications.

So, who is going to win this Phoenix race? When is the next caution coming? It feels like only a few drives will survive this race at this point.
