Chase Elliott pressed for his opinion on Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson ending at Pocono
Chase Elliott was one of the many drivers asked for his opinion of last Sunday’s on-track incident between Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson ahead of Sunday’s Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway.
The incident occurred with seven laps remaining in the HighPoint.com 400 at Pocono Raceway, in which Hamlin appeared to make contact with Larson while executing a pass to take the lead. Hamlin found himself in victory lane for the 50th time in his NASCAR Cup Series career, while Larson fell back into the pack and finished 20th.
Elliott said he didn’t know “what’s right or wrong,” admitting he didn’t get a good look at what happened.
“Really haven’t seen it,” Elliott said, via Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports. “I was behind it, but I wasn’t really close enough to see what was going on. I don’t know — I don’t know what’s right or wrong or indifferent, but it gives y’all something to talk about, so I guess that’s a win. “
Elliott, who had a run-in with Hamlin earlier this season which resulted in him receiving a one-race suspension, said he wasn’t “surprised in general” at what occurred at Pocono.

“I’m not surprised in general,” Elliott said. “I just think regardless of who it is, seems like that’s just kind of the world we live in now, and yeah, that’s just however much each individual is willing to put up with, is kinda up to them I guess.”
Martin Truex Jr. wouldn’t make a move like Denny Hamlin at Pocono: ‘Not How I Race’
Martin Truex Jr., Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, went as far to call it a “dirty” move. He further expounded on that Saturday when asked for his opinion of the incident.
“I think I did everything that I would do again,” Truex Jr. said. “Try to race it out. Yeah I guess I could have tried something different but I – if I was in the same situation I’d probably race that race the same way. I thought we had a shot at winning, and we didn’t get the right push we needed when we had the bottom on the restarts. But I guess in hindsight I probably could have done the same thing Denny did, I don’t know. Haven’t really thought about it. I would probably do the same exact thing if I was in that situation. I restarted second once on the outside and couldn’t get the lead. Is what it is.”
“I don’t know, Bob. Guess it’s not how I race. I race how I always do and yeah hindsight I could have done something different I guess. That was all it was. I think the way I race people going forward is the same I always have and I think in the long game that pays off. We’ll wait and see I guess maybe it won’t maybe it will. I don’t know but I just race the way I race and that’s it.”
