The Chicago Bears are making major moves to revamp the organization.

On Thursday, the Bears became the second team to make an offseason hire by inking a deal with former Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to lead the organization.

With a defensive-minded head coach taking over a team with a young, talented first-round quarterback in Justin Fields as the hopeful future franchise passer, it appears the new Chicago Bears front man isn’t wasting time to address his development.

On Friday, longtime Packers’ reporter Tom Silverstein reported the Bears have already made an offer to Green Bay pass-game coordinator Luke Getsy to become the new offensive coordinator in Chicago.

Chicago Bears making major push on rival assistant

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported Packers pass-game coordinator Luke Getsy could be a candidate to become Chicago’s offensive coordinator and play-caller, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. Getsy has been with the Packers since 2014 — with a stop at Mississippi State in 2018.

While with Green Bay, Getsy worked his way up from offensive quality control coach to wide receivers coach before heading to Mississippi State as offensive coordinator. He returned to the Packers in 2019 as quarterbacks coach before adding passing game coordinator to his title in 2020.

There’s no denying Getsy has the pedigree the Chicago Bears are looking for to help develop and mentor Fields in his second NFL season.

If Getsy leaves, it’d be a big loss for the Green Bay coaching staff. The Denver Broncos hired Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as head coach, and Getsy’s departure would be another hole to fill on the offensive staff.

The Chicago Bears hired Eberflus — the former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator — on Thursday to replace Matt Nagy after four years. As he assembles his staff, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Colts linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi is likely following Eberflus to Chicago.

Another name to watch is former Las Vegas Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia. The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs reported Bisaccia could make his way to the Bears as special teams coordinator — the title he held in Las Vegas before moving up to interim head coach. He interviewed for the Raiders full-time head coach job this week, and Eberflus is interested.

As of now, everything is speculation until the Chicago Bears make an official hire. If it happens, many believe Getsy will have full control over play-calling –and with the success of the Packers’ offense in recent years — Chicago fans would surely feel like this is a major upgrade on the offensive side of the ball.
