New Chiefs receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown injured his shoulder on the very first play of the Kansas City preseason. He could miss some significant time.

That’s according to Chiefs coach Andy Reid who said Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation. He still was in the hospital in Jacksonville getting examined after KC finished its game against the Jaguars.

However, late Saturday, Brown shared a message on social media. He wrote “God makes no mistakes.”

Reid said Brown’s injury is similar to the one suffered by Tyreek Hill in 2019 when he still played for the Chiefs. That year, the injury caused Hill to miss four games.

The sternoclavicular joint connects the collarbone to the breastbone at the base of the neck.

The injury was to Brown’s left shoulder. The Jaguars rushed Patrick Mahomes. The quarterback found Brown for an 11-yard gain. Jacksonville cornerback Montaric Brown made the tackle, with the Chiefs receiver going down hard on his shoulder.

Here’s why Brown’s injury could be significant for the Chiefs, the two-time defending Super Bowl champions. Kansas City needed receivers to bolster their offense. It was a weakness last season, although the Chiefs overcame it with their post-season run. Mahomes to Travis Kelce is one of the best combos in the NFL. But an offense needs more.

So the Chiefs signed Brown, a former first-rounder, in the off season. They then selected Xavier Worthy, who set the 40-yard dash record at the NFL Combine, in the first round of April’s NFL Draft. Worthy did play Saturday night. But he didn’t catch a pass.

Most people expected the Chiefs pairing of Brown and Worthy to be the fastest set of receivers this side of Miami. But put that expectation on hold, at least for awhile.

The Ravens selected Brown in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He’d been the big-play threat for Oklahoma for two seasons as he caught passes from back-to-back No. 1 draft picks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. Brown played in Baltimore for three seasons, then the Ravens traded him to the Cardinals. Brown left Arizona this spring to sign a one-year deal with the Chiefs.

KC didn’t use its starters much against the Jaguars in a 26-13 loss. Mahomes completed three of his four passes for 27 yards. Kelce caught one pass for seven yards and took a seat.
