Chris Godwin got to play with Tom Brady late in the superstar’s career. The two won a Super Bowl and spent three seasons together in Tampa Bay.

Brady retired in February and is enjoying his post-football life. As players across the NFL are reporting to training camp, the old quarterback just announced his newest project. He’s the new owner of a team set to compete in the debut season of the UIM E1 World Championship. That’s a championship featuring electric-powered boats. He’s also become a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and the WNBA’s Vegas Aces.

Meanwhile, Godwin and the rest of the Bucs veterans will report to training camp, Tuesday, a day after the rookies. Although he’s no longer in the game, Tom Brady still has a big influence over Chris Godwin. The receiver talked about what Brady taught him during an interview with Rich Eisen.

“A lot of knowledge, just how to continue to be the best pro I can be,” Godwin said of Brady. “The importance of making sure that you’re taking care of your body, all the time. How that you have to make sure that you’re in position to win and make sure that football isn’t a more difficult game that it needs to be.”

Chris Godwin says Tom Brady stressed treating teammates the right way

Godwin explained what he meant. “Like you can’t just go out there and bank on your guy being the guy who wins his rep every single time. We have some extremely weak players in this league. We’re like the best in the world at what we do. Odds are you’re going to win some and lose some. So banking on that math it’s not going to work.”

He added: “Also, carry yourself the right way, you’re treating people in the lockerroom the right way. Things I’ve already done, but it’s cool to get the reassurance from someone who’s been doing it as long as he was. (And) that I’m headed in the right direction.”

Godwin now must work on his on-field chemistry between Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask. One will be the new starting quarterback. Mayfield signed a one-year deal with the Bucs. And he brought a ton of experience with him. The former Heisman winner at Oklahoma was the No. 1 pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s since played for the Panthers and Rams.

“I like what I’ve seen so far, man,” Godwin said of Mayfield. “He’s been a really good guy in our locker room so far. And … the first thing that stood out to me was just the way he carries himself. He’s not like some arrogant guy that’s going to come in and be like, ‘Oh, I’m the guy and all you guys need to kind of like fall in line.’”
