We’ve reached the pinnacle of NFL offseason content. NBC analyst Chris Simms recently released his ranking of the top-40 quarterbacks in the league, causing quite a stir on social media.
Simms released his “controversial” list on Saturday, receiving some pretty substantial attention. But, any list produced this time of year is going to land a lot of criticism. It’s what the offseason is for, right?
Simms started his list with the undoubted choice at No. 1 — Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs superstar is a two-time league MVP and owns a pair of Super Bowl rings. There’s very little resistance to naming Mahomes the top QB in the NFL right now.
Here’s a look at Simms’ complete top-40, via NBC Sports:
What was the reaction on social media? There was plenty of criticism (how shocking, right?).
“(Jalen) Hurts at 7 below (Trevor) Lawrence and (Justin) Herbert is criminal,” one Twitter user wrote. Another was upset about Kirk Cousins coming in at No. 12, saying, “10 years in the league, and a loaded minnesota roster for like 3-4 years and Kirk Cousins is under the ‘what’s your ceiling’ category.”
Another individual added, “really ranking Russ of Geno, eh?”
These lists always get plenty of attention, as well as criticism. It’s almost impossible to accurately rank quarterbacks in the NFL and appease everyone in the crowd.

Some are just a little more vocal about their dissatisfaction with the rankings than others.
Aaron Rodgers having ‘most fun in a while’ with Jets
Even at the age of 39, Aaron Rodgers came in at No. 8 on Simms’ list heading into the 2023 NFL season. Last year wasn’t quite the best we’ve seen from the four-time league MVP, but he’s still got plenty of talent.
Is there a chance we see major improvement from last season? While it’s not exactly going to shock anyone if Rodgers returns to his old form, it does sound like there’s potential for a bigger year — at least based on his comments.
The veteran quarterback says he’s having a ton of fun with his new team in New York.
“The last six weeks have been about the most fun I’ve had in a while,” Rodgers said, via USA TODAY’s Lorenzo Reyes. “It’s fun to come to work and be excited about what we’re doing.”
But with that fun comes high expectations. Many believe Rodgers is capable of leading the Jets back to the playoffs and making a potential push for the Super Bowl. Does he still have that kind of capability?
