Christian McCaffrey calf-achilles injury update: San Francisco 49ers RB status revealed for MNF
Chrisitan McCaffrey is inactive for the 49ers’ Monday Night Football matchup against the New York Jets, according to NFL insider Mike Garafolo.
McCaffrey is dealing with a calf-achilles injury. He was previously listed as questionable on the team’s injury report but has been limited since suffering the injury last week in practice.
The former Stanford star is coming off of a 2023 season with 1,459 rushing yards (a career-high) and 14 touchdowns. As a receiver, he also hauled in 564 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. McCaffrey won the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award for his performance and helped San Francisco advance to a Super Bowl appearance.
San Francisco rewarded McCaffrey for his standout play by extending his contract and re-setting the running back market with a new deal. He will now average $19 million per year. It’s an additional $8 million over what he was originally going to make in the first two years of his deal, plus an increase in guaranteed money, which is now up to $24 million.

For his efforts, McCaffrey is a three-time First-Team All-Pro (2019, 2023 for two positions) as well as the league’s Second-Team tailback in 2018. He was traded from the Panthers to the 49ers in October of 2022 where he has flourished in San Francisco.
However, he’ll be beginning the 2024-25 season on the sidelines during the first Monday Night Football game of the year.
San Francisco and New York kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET live on ABC and ESPN.
His status for the 49ers Week 2 road trip against the Minnesota Vikings in six days time will be updated throughout the week as he continues to rest his lower leg.
