Not only is San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey out for Monday’s Week 1 home contest against the New York Jets, but there is real concern about his availability moving forward.

NFL insider Adam Schefter, speaking on ESPN‘s “Monday Night Countdown,” said “there’s a real strong possibility” that McCaffrey doesn’t suit up in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. McCaffrey, 28, is sidelined with a calf/Achilles injury and bringing him back on the turf at U.S. Bank Stadium might not be the smartest decision. Jordan Mason will get the start in McCaffrey’s absence.

“On Friday, Christian McCaffrey pulled himself out of practice,” Schefter said. “They were not overly concerned; they did not think it was a big deal. They thought and expected that he would be able to go tonight. The issue is he came into today for treatment and the calf still was tight. Keep in mind, he basically didn’t practice all summer long. It was not just a calf, but it was also his Achilles. So, you got two issues here.

“They decided in the interest of it being a long season to hold him out tonight, not to activate him. Jordan Mason is going to start tonight and not only is Christian McCaffrey out tonight, but there’s a real strong chance he’s not going to play Sunday either. They play on the road, at Minnesota, on turf and it’s a shorter week. So, he’s inactive tonight and it looks like there’s a real strong possibility McCaffrey will not play Sunday against the Vikings as well.”

49ers make Christian McCaffrey a surprise inactive in Week 1

McCaffrey has been dealing with the Achilles injury dating back to the start of training camp. He did not play in the preseason, but the 49ers were confident he’d be ready to go by Monday’s season opener. McCaffrey returned to practice this past Tuesday and said he felt “much better” speaking with reporters Friday.

But for now, his 2024 debut will have to wait.

McCaffrey is coming off a season in which he won the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award after posting 1,459 rushing yards, 564 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns.
