The city of Homestead is currently fighting a grass fire ahead of NASCAR taking over the area for a weekend of races. On Thursday morning, Homestead issued an update on the grass fire and said the NASCAR events are still happening this weekend.

“Grass Fire Update: The City of Homestead & emergency teams are monitoring the fire,” the city wrote on X/Twitter. “US 1 may close intermittently; Card Sound Rd remains closed. Power outages possible due to damage. Fire is 20% contained. NASCAR events remain on schedule. Stay updated.”

The NASCAR Cup, Xfinity and Truck Series teams have been made aware of the fire. Per Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports, none of the teams from the three series are making changes to the schedule.

“Checked with teams in all three series last night and this morning and they have been given no indication of any changes to the Homestead schedule,” Pockrass wrote. “Teams that planned on leaving this morning are leaving as planned.”

Denny Hamlin to debut new sponsor at Homestead

Homestead-Miami Speedway is one of the top tracks in NASCAR. Denny Hamlin has the most wins at the track among active drivers but hasn’t won there since 2020. There’s going to be some added motivation for him, as he will debut his new sponsorship with Progressive.

“This is a huge deal for our No. 11 team and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing,” Hamlin said in a statement. “We’re really looking forward to having Progressive on board and being able to deliver for them on and off the race track. For me, it’s exciting to team up with a brand like Progressive that is so innovative with their marketing and the different ways you see them activate. I can’t wait to get going with them starting this weekend.”

“When the opportunity arose for us to be a part of the Joe Gibbs Racing family and support renowned NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin, we were all in,” Sean Freeman, Progressive’s Business Leader of Direct Media, said. “We love JGR’s pursuit of excellence and Hamlin’s proven success on the track. Together, our marketing and their driving styles align well and can’t wait to see the No. 11 in action.”
