CJ Gardner-Johnson calls out former Eagles DC Jonathan Gannon for Super Bowl LVII loss
CJ Gardner-Johnson starred for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022 but called out former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon for the team’s Super Bowl LVII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Arizona Cardinals hired Gannon as their new head coach and he was asked at the NFL Scouting Combine what went wrong in the Super Bowl. The Eagles lost 38-35 after they held a 24-14 lead at halftime.
In a since deleted tweet, Gardner-Johnson quote tweeted Gannon’s take on the podium.
“You ain’t put us in position to make plays (shrug emoji),” Gardner-Johnson initially wrote on Twitter.
Gardner-Johnson provided a follow-up to the deleted tweet.
“Going back to sleep (sleep emoji and peace emoji),” he wrote.
Gannon did not say anything out of the ordinary regarding the question about the second half. The new Cardinals head coach simply said he wished they could’ve done better.
“They made a lot of good plays in that second half and we weren’t able to get some stops when we needed to,” Gannon said. “I obviously could have done a better job of coaching a couple of things that I want out of the call, so tough to swallow when you look back at that.
“Because it’s such a big stage and we didn’t get it done for the city, for Mr. Lurie, for Howie (Roseman) and for the head coach, but learned a lot from it. And you know, you gotta give credit to Kansas City. But obviously I could have done a lot better job with what we were doing.”
Either way, Gardner-Johnson was apparently not pleased with Gannon’s game plan or adjustments against the Chiefs.

The Eagles hired Sean Desai as the new defensive coordinator right after naming Brian Johnosn the new offensive coordinator.
Desai replaced Gannon earlier this week after serving as the associate head coach for the Seattle Seahawks.
“We had a great time. He’s really, really a brilliant football guy,” Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said this week. “The background and the information he holds, his access to information is really special. He helped us a ton getting going and making a year’s transition (the Seahawks changed defensive coordinators in 2022).
“We got along great. It was a good challenge for me. [Desai] comes from a different football background so it was fun to knock heads and always figure it out.”
Gardner-Johnson is a free agent after this trade to the Eagles from the New Orleans Saints prior to the year.
