The Cleveland Browns are promoting Tommy Rees to offensive coordinator, according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Rees joined the Browns coaching staff this season and was the team’s passing game specialist and tight ends coach.

Tommy Rees will take over for Ken Dorsey who held the position for one season. Earlier this month, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski talked about the issues the Browns had on offense in 2024.

“We have to play better on offense in a bunch of different areas,” Stefanski said, per the Browns’ official website. “I don’t think it’s as simple as just one saying running effectively, that is a component of it. But we need to do a better job of setting our team up for success.”

Stefanski also explained why the Browns moved on from Dorsey. “I think there is a lot that we need to look into and get fixed,” Stefanski said. “This is never about one person – or in this case, about one coach or another coach. This is something that we all own, and we all share in that. But we have to look at all of it.”

Tommy Rees talks about having a ‘full-circle’ moment with the Browns

Before joining the Browns, Rees was the offensive coordinator for the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2023. During the 2023 season, the Crimson Tide finished fourth in the SEC in scoring offense (34 points per game), won the SEC and reached the semifinals of the College Football Playoff.

From 2017 to 2022, Rees was part of the Notre Dame coaching staff as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator (2020-2022). He also played for Norte Dame, spending time as a quarterback from 2010 to 2013.

In August, Rees talked about returning to the Browns after working for the team as a ball boy nearly 20 years ago. “I think a big part of when I was growing to love the game of football was watching Browns games because my dad was obviously here through some of those formative years for me,” Rees said, per the Browns’ official website. “So, that’s always been something that was kind of held close to. My brother was a big part of it, he was here working, he was a little bit older than I was. For our family, it comes full circle a little bit, which is pretty neat.”
