The Cleveland Browns officially unveiled a new dog logo Monday that was chosen by the fans as part of a contest. The logo was designed by Houston Mark, who according to his Twitter account is a graphic designed for the North Texas athletic department.

“The fact that Browns fans felt represented by the logo was by far the most gratifying thing about this entire project,” Mark said via ClevelandBrowns.com. “To see that so many people felt connected and that they saw themselves in it was just incredible. It’s what you want to do as a logo designer.”

There are eight different symbols included in the logo that touch upon the the history of the city of Cleveland and the history of the Browns.

These logos symbols include eight spikes — “The collar features 8 spikes, evoking intensity in their form and tradition in number, with the Browns finishing champions 8 times in their history,” according to a graphic explaining the symbols. Another symbol includes the east end zone of Cleveland Municipal Stadium as “The outline of Cleveland Municipal Stadium makes up the design of the tag, paying homage to the city by forming a “C,” and the origin of the Dawg Pound with a highlighted East Endzone.”

“The thing I really wanted to focus on was the fans and the relationship they have with the team,” Mack said. “How can I make the Cleveland Browns fanbase the forefront of the design while also maintaining this aggressive, no-nonsense attitude?”

The Browns first announced the contest April 17 with a wide selection of logos being narrowed down to a top five and then later a top two.

The dog used in the logo is a Mastiff breed, which was also chosen via fan bracket in March.

“We are so excited to unveil a new dawg logo that perfectly encapsulates who we are as a franchise and as a city,” Browns executive vice president JW Johnson said in a statement. “Our fans have been asking us for a new dawg logo for quite some time, so it made perfect sense for them to select the logo themselves and decide how they want our team to be represented — and they made a great choice.”

This is the second fan voting contest the franchise has used in the past two years after they had a contest last year for a midfield logo. The fans ended up choosing Brownie the Elf as the logo to use at midfield at Cleveland Stadium.
