Clyde Edwards-Helaire passes physical for Kansas City Chiefs
Clyde Edwards-Helaire signed to be back with Kansas City this offseason. Now, with practice starting up for the Chiefs, the franchise has made an important designation on the fifth-year running back.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport shared a tweet on Sunday with names of several players involving in pre-camp transactions. That included Edwards-Helaire as he has passed his physical for Kansas City.
Edwards-Helaire has appeared in 48 games, including 32 starts, over the past four years with the Chiefs. In that time, he has rushed 441 times for 1,845 yards, good for 4.2 yards per rush and 38.4 per game, and a dozen touchdowns. He has also caught 89 passes for 765 yards, good for 8.6 a reception, and seven more scores.
Edwards-Helaire led Kansas City in rushing as a rookie in 2020. However, he has become a secondary back the last two seasons due to injuries as well as their rotation. That would specifically be in reference to the emergence of Isiah Pacheco.
Still, as part of the Chiefs’ current run, Edwards-Helaire has become a two-time and consecutive Super Bowl champion.
Edwards-Helaire did not have his fifth-year option picked up by the organization. However, they did sign him to a one-year deal back at the beginning of April.
This has all come after Edwards-Helaire was a first-round pick at No. 32 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. Kansas City drafted him out of LSU where he was part of an iconic team there as well.

Edwards-Helaire spent three seasons with the Tigers in Baton Rouge. 2019 highlighted that collegiate career where he posted 1,867 yards from scrimmage and 17 total touchdowns with 1,414 of those yards and 16 of the scores coming on the ground. That made him their leading back on an offense that was best in the nation and a team that went undefeated in winning the College Football Playoff.
Edwards-Helaire has had a lot of success over his last half decade of football. He’ll now look to continue that span with him passing and being back with the Chiefs.
