The Kansas City Chiefs (13-1) have released running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, he announced Monday on social media.

“Love ya KC! A family I didn’t know I needed, y’all made a Kid from Baton Rouge dreams come true!
To Chiefs Kingdom, it’s all love and the support I had in troubling times will forever be unmatched from you guys! With love!” Edwards-Helaire wrote on X.

Edwards-Helaire’s release comes after spending nearly five seasons with the Chiefs, who selected him in the first round (32nd overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU. His best season came as a rookie, when he accumulated 1,100 yards from scrimmage (803 rushing, 297 receiving) in 13 games.

Injuries began to pile up, however, and Edwards-Helaire appeared in just 10 games the following season. He lost his starting job to then rookie tailback Isiah Pacheco midway through the 2022 campaign and was placed on injured reserve 10 weeks into the season.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s Chiefs career is over

The 25-year-old bounced back to play in 15 games in 2023, albeit in a backup role behind Pacheco. Kansas City placed him on the league’s Reserve/Non-football illness (NFI) list prior to the 2024 Week 1 opener and he has yet to play a snap this season.

Edwards-Helaire wraps up his Chiefs career with 1,845 rushing yards on 4.2 yards per carry and 12 touchdowns, to go along with two Super Bowl rings.
