WATCH: Cole Anthony jokes about Duke while praising Paolo Banchero debut

Former UNC first-round draft pick Cole Anthony spoke about the great debut of Paolo Banchero, while reminding fans he still doesn’t love Duke. The fun moment happened as Anthony spoke on the ESPN broadcast at halftime as the Orlando Magic played the Sacramento Kings. Anthony was high on what had impressed him about Banchero since the day they drafted him, even if he came from his college’s most bitter rival.

Cole Anthony on Paolo Banchero

Anthony was asked during halftime about how he loved to tease his newest teammate after he shared a photo of Banchero when he was much younger following his selection as the number one pick of the 2022 NBA Draft. Anthony joked that Banchero had grown up a bunch since the photo was taken, noting that he’s built like an NBA player now.

“He definitely grew,” said Anthony. “He’s about 250 [pounds] solid, so he definitely grew. He’s not no little boy no more. But man, that kid is so talented — he loves the game. I got the chance to actually get in the gym with him right after the draft and he loves it. He works hard and I think he’s got a really, really high ceiling. I think he’s gonna be really good.”

Anthony was then served a softball that he delivered on as only a member of the Duke-UNC rivalry could, asking if this meant that UNC and Duke were coming together on the Magic sideline.

“Man, them Duke dudes know they don’t got nothing on us. Wendell [Carter Jr.] and Paolo both know that.”

The Magic hope to see the growing chemistry carry their team to another level this season as Anthony and Banchero look to improve upon Orlando’s 22-60 record from last year.

Banchero made a strong showing in his Summer League debut on Thursday against the Houston Rockets that continued into the weekend. The former Duke star scored 17 points and recorded six assists and four rebounds in that game, with his defensive presence making an impact all game long.
